Day Seven: Shine a light…

Expression of gratitude at Matters Magazine Window

Gratitude “Happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we DO have.” Fredrick Keonig

It doesn’t get any simpler than this: Happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we DO have.

Yet, somehow we keep doing it.  We keep mistakenly thinking that tomorrow we will be happy.  We seem to suffer from “one day someday” syndrome, believing that when something changes externally, we will finally find true happiness.

We seem to know this to be true intellectually but if you look around, you will notice that the pull of the “one day someday…I will be happy” syndrome is strong.  After all, we keep going back for more, don’t we?

But today, it doesn’t have to be so.  The way to overcome this syndrome is to first single pointedly contemplate what we do have.  I was speaking to someone yesterday who after many years of foo-fooing the idea of practicing gratitude, decided to see what all the fuss was about.  She started with making an extensive gratitude list and picking one thing to contemplate daily.  After a few days of practicing, she told me: “This works!   I had never truly realized just how much I have and how much is TRULY working in my life.  It’s as though I was blind to it before”.

Let’s shine a light on what is working for YOU today.
