Day 13: No more problems please!

A family expressing their gratitude together at The Roman Gourmet

“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors. ” African Proverb

“No more challenges please!”.  Do you ever say something like this to yourself?  Do you ever feel like you can’t let go feeling disappointed, upset, down or angry with someone or something  in your life?

What if things could be different?  You see, we are so used to relating to the world as if our happiness is caused by something or someone “out there”.  We look to our friends, our family, our jobs, our houses, our situations to bring us happiness.  We get attached to things in our everyday routines being a certain way and if they don’t go as planned…what happens?  The more deeply we watch our minds we realize just how attached we are.  Think about how you feel when you have a goal and you don’t achieve the outcome.

What if we started to relate to our world differently?  Wouldn’t it FEEL differently?  What if today, you adopted a view that happiness comes from learning to react peacefully to whatever happens to you?  We know this deep down but we don’t often take a moment to contemplate it and act on it.

Don’t you want to become skillful at feeling peace of mind and reacting peacefully regardless of what is going on “out there”?  Well…for that you NEED “rough seas” to practice!  You need challenges to practice reminding yourself that your happiness comes from your reaction and not “them” or “that’ out there.  You need “problems” to practice patience with yourself and others.  You need tough moments in your life to help you see that you can get up again and to see that nothing is permanent.

So if you were relating to the world from this point of view,  perhaps the challenge itself will not be such a “challenge”.  You might even appreciate the challenge and start to see that this is your greatest opportunity to become the skillful sailor of your life.

What are you grateful for today?

  1. Today, I am grateful for my husband, who has offered me many opportunities to practice what I preach and therefore is my greatest teacher. And for Amelie who expressed she is grateful for her feet because without them she could not walk or swim as she does. I am grateful for her teacher for getting her to think about this. Lucila

  2. Thankful for another great post. Thankful for great partnerships. THANKFUL TO MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO CATCH ME WHEN I LEAP AND ARE TOTALLY ROCKING OUT THIS PROJECT! YOU SUSTAIN ME/ US. This project is about us returning the favor in the best way we know how. A love letter project of sorts, to our friends and family, to our town, and to the day that gives us another chance to FEEL GOOD. Riding the good vibrations of ‘being where my feet are’ today 🙂

  3. I am grateful today for our floor. Building a home is very challenging and can be very stressful, and like the sea, the ride is not always smooth! I agree so much with you and your words of wisdom. We were waiting for a long time for the rain to stop in order to build the floor. It is so easy to loose control of one’s temper. “Reacting peacefully”. That is the key! I am grateful for the peace I feel today. Thank you.

  4. I’m grateful for the opportunity to relax for the rest of the evening. My son Gio is in bed fast asleep, my partner at the firehouse working and just little old me getting ready for bed. Reviewing final emails and right to a book. I’m grateful for the time tonight after a long day full of challenges! Opportunities to practice.

  5. I am grateful for my sister-in-law, Candice, who is so full of energy, creativity, good intentions, and love.

  6. Today I am grateful for my co-worker Marques. Marques makes me laugh at least 10 times a day and for that alone I am grateful. He is a very strong, caring, loving, and compassionate person. Last year he adopted his 10 year old niece, Aaliyah and he is doing an outstanding job raising her…I love spending time with the two of them. I am grateful to be a part of their life and for the opportunity to be a strong, positive, female role-model in Aaliyah’s life.

  7. Today i am thankful i was given the gift to inspire kids, I was lucky enough to have somebody to inspire me as a troubled kid and took it with me as i grew up now im doing the same with others and when they get older can pass it on to the next generation ^_^
